Wixom -- Two out-of-state renewable energy companies today announced they have selected the shuttered Ford Wixom plant for a $725 million redevelopment project, creating what officials called the largest renewable energy park in the country.
Development of the project hinges on the companies receiving federal loans to buy the abandoned site from Ford Motor Co.
If those loans are approved, the companies, CEOs for Xtreme Power of Austin, Texas, and Clairvoyant Energy of Santa Barbara, Calif., could start hiring next year for construction jobs to rehab the site. Overall, the project could bring 4,300 jobs to Michigan. ...

WIXOM, Mich.—Longtime environmental advocate and Ford Motor Co. Executive Chairman Bill Ford Jr. on Thursday formally announced a massive recycling project—a $725 million plan to retool a plant that once made Thunderbirds into one that churns out storage batteries and solar panels.
"We're recycling our Wixom facility and transforming it into what we believe is the largest renewable energy manufacturing park in the United States," Ford said from the factory floor of the former Wixom Assembly Plant, which closed in 2007 after 50 years. ...
