October 25, 2006 – Xtreme Power of Kyle, Texas announced the delivery of a 200KW primary power system to be used at the South Pole to smooth the load requirements of a new telescope. The project is coordinated by scientists at the University of Chicago; four other US universities, and the National Science Foundation. View project here.

The Xtreme Power System will provide primary power to the telescope to reduce the peak power demand needs. With a 200kw peak capacity and a 100Kwhr of storage the system will also provide close to one hour of backup power (UPS.) The combined system will be installed in the telescope control room and require no special environmental controls.

The current South Pole station power plant is unable to manage the high peak power demands of the telescope. With the Xtreme Power system, the power system will see a smooth load while the peaks and regenerative negative pulses caused by the Telescope’s rotations are all absorbed into Xtreme Power’s patented power cell. The result is a predictable, constant load on the power plant and a continuous operation at the Telescope. Furthermore, the Xtreme Power System has the ability to run for over one hour of operation independent of the power grid.

The testing for the system was conducted at the Xtreme Power facility in Kyle, Texas and included representatives from the National Science Foundation, Raytheon Polar Service and University of Chicago. The system was tested with over 200kw peaks, negative 40kw regenerative peaks and UPS lengths of one hour. The system was accepted and is in route to the South Pole Station.

This order shows Xtreme Power’s ability to deliver Load Leveling/UPS systems.” said Carlos Coe President of Xtreme Power, located in Kyle, Texas. “The power plant facility at the South Pole is already experiencing peak demand challenges and we are happy to be able to offer a solution that allows for uninterrupted scientific work without electricity brown-out concerns,” he added.

Xtreme Power offers customers Load Leveling and Power Back-Up systems from a 100kW through Megawatt range of products. The solutions offer low total cost, high reliability, small footprint, high efficiency, long life and almost no maintenance.

About The South Pole Telescope
A new 10-meter diameter telescope is being constructed for use at the U.S. Antarctic Program’s South Pole research station. The telescope is designed for conducting large-area millimeter and sub-millimeter wave surveys of faint, low contrast emission, as required to map primary and secondary anisotropies in the cosmic microwave background. The SPT is collaboration between the U of Chicago, UC Berkley, Case Western Reserve University, U of Illinois, and Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory. It is primarily funded though the National Science Foundation’s office of Polar Programs. View more on the South Pole Telescope project - http://spt.uchicago.edu
